Yes. I agree that homesteading and any kind of independent, decentralized, anti-establishment lifestyle will be demonized and made "illegal." The authorities may even make an example out of a few to scare the stragglers back into the fold of the smart city complex.

Beyond that... if there's any kind of serious collapse of energy and supply chains then the homesteads will be the first places to visit for the hungry city dwellers unless you're in a very remote location that's hard to get to. And that applies anywhere in the world as we're all thoroughly dependent on the globalized interconnected system.

There are many layers to the narrative that is unfolding. It's hard to pin down exactly which part is relevant to each individual based on their unique circumstances. All we can do is place our bets as best we can and wait to see if the horses even make it to the end of the race!

Yes. That's it exactly. A full tank of gas can get you quite far after raiding the nearest gun shops and loading up on ammo! These "gang members" (everyone will quickly join one) will also do other things to family members that don't exactly fall into the politeness category once they reach the nearest farms. It is what it is.

Ex soldiers and police in Russia would commandeer local housing and get the people to work for them growing food and proving "entertainment" in exchange for protection.
